What is Hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is a generic term used to describe a specific approach to educating and teaching women calm birth practices that use hypnosis and other natural pain management techniques for labour.
There are actually different types of hypnobirthing programs available, but I am going to tell you about the program I teach and why it is different.
The Hypnobirthing Australia Positive Birth Program teaches women about normal physiological birth including what happens in labour, when to know its starting, what the various stages are and what she can do in pregnancy and labour to improve her chances of having an uncomplicated and normal delivery.
We teach our students a toolbox of comfort measures incorporating hypnosis, breathing, visualisation, acupressure, touch and movement that can be used with support from their doula or birth partner and from aids such as heat packs, cold packs, birth balls, essential oils, rocking chair, shower, bath and squat bars.
However, our program acknowledges the reality that sometimes labour gets complicated and needs to get medicalised for the safety of mother and baby. For this reason, our program teaches women and their partners all about the different types of medical interventions available including pain relieving medicine and medical procedures. We link you in with evidence based research and encourage you to understand the risks and benefits of the various kinds of interventions including a decision making formula for how to make informed choices regarding your care.
Combined with my yoga and doula services, we work together to develop your birth vision, prepare your birth preferences, build your birth partners skills and confidence in supporting your needs in labour and find out what pain management techniques will work best for you.
This holistic body and mind service will empower you with knowledge about childbirth and build your stamina and strength for coping with the demands of labour and parenthood.
